# Boise to Portland Drive Nov 2026: I-84, TSO & Game Weekends

Two weekends, two time zones, one interstate. Here's how to plan the drive, check winter roads, and decide when flying one leg makes more sense.

Between Boise and Portland, I-84 trades sagebrush for basalt cliffs and runs along the Columbia River Gorge. This November, two weekends give you a good reason to make the drive.

**The short answer:**

- **The two weekends:**
  - Oregon State plays at Boise State on Nov. 14.
  - Over Thanksgiving, Trans-Siberian Orchestra plays Boise on Nov. 27 and Portland on Nov. 28, and the Blazers host the Pelicans on Nov. 29.
- **Before you go:** check Idaho 511 and Oregon's TripCheck, carry chains or traction tires, and remember Boise is an hour ahead of Portland.
- **Flying one leg:** both airports list nonstop BOI–PDX service on Alaska.

## How do I plan the Oregon State weekend in Boise?

Oregon State visits Albertsons Stadium on Nov. 14. It's one of the Broncos' last two Pac-12 home games, and the matchup most likely to bring Oregon fans east on I-84.

- **Friday:** drive east, and check Idaho 511 before you cross the state line.
- **Saturday:**
  - Gates open two hours before the 4 p.m. MT kickoff.
  - Single-game parking is $20 per space in select lots, first-come, first-served.
  - The free Game Day Bus runs every 15 minutes from downtown.
- **Sunday:** drive home in daylight if you can.

## Coming from out of town? Fly into BOI or PDX, drive the rest

- **Flying into BOI:** the Rental Car Center connects by a covered walkway just west of baggage claim, and rideshare pickup is on the upper curb. Visit Boise puts the airport about four miles from downtown.
- **Flying into PDX:** the Rental Car Center is signed from baggage claim, and the MAX Red Line runs to Rose Quarter Transit Center, across from Moda Center. Travel Portland puts PDX 9 miles northeast of downtown.
- **Fly-drive:** BOI and PDX both list nonstops on Alaska, so you can fly one leg and drive the other. Check the airline for dates, and the rental company for one-way rules.

> **Good to know:** Boise is on Mountain time and Portland on Pacific. Check whether each kickoff or showtime is listed in MT or PT before you set your departure time.

Once Alvro launches, some hosts will offer delivery to an airport, hotel or address. That could include a car waiting at BOI or PDX.

## Can I see TSO in both cities over Thanksgiving?

Not realistically. Pick one city and build the weekend around it.

- **In Portland:** the Tree Lighting and Blazers on Friday, TSO on Saturday, Blazers on Sunday.
- **In Boise:** a Black Friday TSO show, then drive west in time for Sunday's Blazers game.

## Have a car that sits idle while you fly?

## How do I check I-84 conditions?

- **Idaho:** Idaho 511 (511.idaho.gov, or dial 511) has road conditions and cameras.
- **Oregon:** TripCheck (tripcheck.com) has road reports and cameras, including the I-84 Cabbage Hill westbound station (mileposts 226–216).

## What are Oregon's chain rules on I-84?

According to TripCheck:

- Signs may tell you to carry chains or traction tires, or to use them.
- Passenger cars and light trucks (10,000 lbs or less, not towing) can usually use traction tires instead.
- A "conditional road closure" can require chains on every vehicle.

## How should I drive in winter conditions?

The Idaho Transportation Department's advice:

- Slow down, and skip cruise control on ice.
- Expect bridges to freeze first.
- Stay behind snowplows. They can be 12 feet wide, plus a wing plow of up to 10 feet.

## Where do I park when I arrive?

- **Portland:** from I-84 westbound, follow I-5 N/Seattle to the Rose Quarter exit. The venue calls prepaid parking "highly recommended." The Garden and Annex garages have a 6'8" clearance, which matters if you have a ski box on the roof.
- **Boise:** ExtraMile Arena sells pre-purchased parking for each TSO show.

## FAQ

### Is there a nonstop flight between Boise and Portland?

Yes. Both Boise Airport and PDX list nonstop service on Alaska. Check the airline for specific dates.

### What time zone is Boise in compared with Portland?

Boise is on Mountain time and Portland is on Pacific time, so Boise is one hour ahead.

### Do I need chains to drive I-84 in Oregon in November?

Maybe. Oregon signs may require you to carry chains or traction tires, or to use them. Passenger cars can usually use traction tires instead. Check TripCheck before you leave.

### How do I check I-84 road conditions?
